Beans Paruppu Usili Tambrahm Style, Step by step recipe with pictures - Beans paruppu usili is a delicacy from tamil brahmin homes. Made in coconut oil, beans paruppu usili becomes a divine combo when paired with rasam sadham, sambar sadham. I have sourced this pakka tambrahm recipe from Ranjani of Nammaathu Samayal :) Happy to feature one of this treasured mom's recipe in My Mom Is Master Chef series.

Beans Paruppu Usili|

    • Green beans chopped – 250 gms


    • Grated coconut – 2 tbsp (Optional)


    • Chopped small onions - 5

For seasoning

    • Turmeric powder


    • Coconut oil – 1 tsp


    • Red chili – 1


    • Curry leaves – few


    • mustard seeds


    • urad dal


    • Salt to taste

To grind for usili

    • Soaked Channa dal – 2 tbsp


    • Soaked Toor Dal – 2 tbsp


    • Soaked Urad Dal – 1 tbsp


    • Red chilies – 2


    • Ginger – 1 inch piece


    • Hing / Asofitida -1/4 tsp


    • Curry leaves – a strand


    • Salt to taste


Step 1 - Soak dals - channa dal, urad dal, toor dal. Add all ingredients for grinding to a blender and grind them into a coarse paste.

Step 2 - Pressure cook the paste for 2 whistles.

Step 3 - Heat a pan with oil, add ingredients for seasoning and saute them. Add the onions and saute them until golden brown.

Step 4 - Add the beans, little salt and turmeric powder. Sprinkle water. Cover and cook until the beans is almost cooked.

Step 5 - Crumble the cooked dal in a blender and add the crumbled dal mixture to beans. Sprinkle desiccated coconut, stir well. Let the usili cook in a medium flame for the next 5 minutes in medium heat. Its done :) Serve hot with rice, sambar/rasam :)
